Temples in Nandyal

Nandyal is most famous for its religious importance among the devotees of Lord Shiva. The best feature of the place is the Nava Nandi Temples located all around the city itself. These Nava Nandi temples lures tourists all around the year from entire world. Nava Nandis include the most famous Mahanandi Temple and the other smaller Shiva temples (including Shivanandi, Prathamanandi, Garudanandi, Suryanandi, Krishnanandi, Vinayakanandi, Naganandi and Somanandi). These temples are also known as the Nava Nandi Kshetrams.  Apart from the Nava Nandis temples, Sri Jagjanni Temple, Omkaram Temple, Srisailam, Sri Yaganti Uma Maheswara Temple, and Ahobilam are popular religious places in and around Nandyal. A beautiful Cathedral built in 1905 also adds to the religious importance and charm of the city.

Srijagjanni , as the name suggests the temple is dedicated to the mother of all universe. The temple is 2nd of its kind in the entire world. It is believed that Srijagjanni  started life on earth and known as Mother of all Gods and Goddesses. The temple consist of a sacred Gopuram, which contains all forms of Gods and Goddesses, and a rare idol of the Goddess herself, which indicates that the entire universe, including all Gods, Goddesses and life, has emerged from the Sri Jagjanni Mata herself. The most famous tourist attraction of Nandyal is Mahanandi Temple, which is the most prominent one amongst the Nava Nandi Temples. The temple is situated at a mere distance of 14 Km from Nandyal and is situated at the foothills of Nallamala forest ranges. The temple is very ancient and dates back to the seventh century. It is one of the biggest temples of Lord Shiva in India, which is the main reason of its popularity. A lot of people visit this temple especially in the month of February during the celebrations of Maha Shivaratri (Biggest Festival of Lord Shiva in India). Yaganti is located at a distance of around 48 Km from Nandyal in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is quiet popular among the devotees of Lord Shiva as Lord Shiva, Parvati and Nandi (Bull) all of them are situated here. The temple is known for its Pushkarni pond, in which The water flows from the mouth of Nandi (Bull) and comes from the surrounding hills. There is no such period when the pond is out of water all around the year although the source of this water is still unknown. Srisailam is located at a distance of 160 Km from Nandyal in the state of Andhra Pradesh on a flat top of Nallamalla ranges by the right side of Krishna River. It is one of the most famous centers of saivite pilgrimage for centuries in South India. The temple is known for its presiding deities including Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy, who holds a place in the twelve Jyothirlingas and Goddess Bhramaramba Devi, who holds a place in the eighteen Mahasakthis. Both of them are self-manifested here.  The significance of this temple can be understood from the fact that it is among the twelve Jyortilingams and one of the few where shaktipeeth (mother goddess) is also present at the same campus. Ahobilam is situated at a distance of 40 Km from Nandyal surrounded by Nallamalla Hills.Ahobhilam is also known as Ahobalam and Nava Narasimha Kshetra. It is known to be the place among locals, where Lord Narsimha killed Hiranyakashipu and saved his people Prahalada. The temple is separated into two parts called lower Ahobilam and upper Ahobilam. The temple consists of  12 shrines in total but only nine shrines out of these are more celebrated. These nine shrines are called Nava Nrisimha and are situated within a circle of 5 Km. All the nine shrines can be visited in two days with the help of a guide. Perfect time to visit this temple is from November to December as the temperature is pleasant during these months.
